Wilda Roberta Wyckoff, 98, passed away at the Ferry County Memorial Hospital in Republic on Tuesday, August 30, 2011. Mrs. Wyckoff was born September 14, 1912 to parents Frank and Ida Coulter in Clay City, Illinois. The family loaded all their possessions on a train and moved to Prosser, WA when Wilda was just six months old.
School in Prosser was difficult for Wilda because she was hard of hearing even as a child. She sat near the front of the class where she could read her teacher's lips. She valued the importance of education and achieved her high school diploma at age 19. After high school she moved to Pocatello Idaho and was employed at Kraft Cheese as a packager. While working there she met James Glass. They were later married and had three children; Jimmy, Chuck and Karen. The couple separated and later divorced.
Wilda moved back to Prosser to care for her mother. While living in Prosser she met Lee Wyckoff. She married Lee and together they had two children; Bill and Mary Ann. The family moved to Hermiston, OR where Wilda became involved with the World War I Veterans Auxiliary Columbia River Lodge 379. She was the last surviving Past President of their women's auxiliary.
In 1977, Mr. and Mrs. Wyckoff moved to Shelton, WA. In November of 1980, after her husband's death, she moved to Port Orchard for a short time. In 1990, she moved to Republic with her daughter, Mary Ann. Living in Republic she found the home she had been looking for and where she wanted to spend the rest of her life. She loved the cooler climate and never tired of looking outside at the wildlife. She moved from living with her daughter into her own apartment and lived independently until she was 92. She eventually moved to an assisted living apartment at the Ferry County Hospital where she enjoyed excellent care and companionship.
Mrs. Wyckoff was active in the Eagles in Republic and served as Vice President in 1990. She was voted to a Golden Eagle Status in 1990. She was an Eagles Aerie 68 Eagle Mother and District 6 Eagle Mother from 2001-2002. Wilda served as a trustee, was on the Christmas Committee and the Cemetery Committee. She was a member of the Republic Presbyterian Church and had attended church all her life.
Wilda took pride in her appearance. She enjoyed jewelry and dressing up in pretty clothes with her fingernails painted and her hair curled. Her favorite hobbies included cutting out newspaper articles and mailing them to family, crossword puzzles, stuffed animals and reading. She never learned to drive a car, but was always ready to go for a car ride or trip.
Mrs. Wyckoff is survived by son, Chuck and daughter in law Trisha Glass of Hermiston, OR; daughter, Karen Schank of Shelton, WA; son Bill Wyckoff of Shelton; daughter, Mary Ann and son in law Ken Marcuson of Republic
Nine grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her brother and sister, her son, son-in-law and a granddaughter.
Graveside services will be held on Saturday, September 10, 2011 1:00 PM at the Republic Cemetery. Afterward, family and friends will gather at the Eagles Lodge for a luncheon.
