Wilbert Marion Hatfield age 90 of Republic died on January 4, 2016 at home in Republic. He was born December 15, 1925 in Grand Rapids, MN to parents Wilbert M. Hatfield Sr. and Ethel M. Atkinson. Wilbert (Bill) grew up in Spring Lake, where he had his first job as a trapper for the state of Minnesota, trapping ground hogs at 8 years old. When he was 9, his family moved to Florida where he worked on his father's chicken farm. Later he became a cowboy breaking horses and worked on a dairy. At 16, he started work in the shipyard working as a high scaler. There he married his welder, Imogene Hughes, in 1944. Bill then joined the Army and served both in Europe and the Pacific. After the war he moved to Addy, Washington where he raised cattle. He later moved to Grand Coulee where he worked on Grand Coulee Dam. He also worked on the Sherman Pass Highway. Bill also worked in two gold mines and two sawmills. He retired from the Knob Hill Mine, and then went to work as a carpenter. Bill retired again and started doodling cartoons for the Republic Newsminer.
Bill is survived by his children, Billie M. VanSlyke and James Boyd Hatfield; his sister, Ruth Janet Peterson, eight grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Cora Imogene Hughes, and sister Alice May Davis
A Military Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, January 23, 2016 11:00 AM at the Bergh Chapel in Republic with interment at the Republic Cemetery.
