Romie Hilderbrant was born in Bassano, Alberta, Canada to Norman and Blanche Hilderbrant on April 16th, 1923. He and his family moved to Republic in 1927 where he spent his childhood days farming, hunting and riding his horse all over Ferry County. Romie attended all twelve years at Republic schools and graduated from Republic High School in 1942. In high school he met his lifelong sweetheart, Jean Smith. After high school Romie worked the family farm during the early years of World War II. He later entered the Army and was stationed in occupied Japan. In 1946, Jean and Romie married and settled in Republic. For the next 71 years Romie and Jean raised daughters, cattle, horses, dogs, grandchildren, trees and great-grandchildren. Romie was an avid outdoorsman with a lively sense of adventure. He shared his love of the outdoors with family and enthusiastically passed on knowledge and stories to all. His favorite activities included bow hunting, getting firewood, horseback riding, trap shooting, water skiing, ice-skating, fishing, hound hunting and picking huckleberries. In 1963 Romie shot a Pope and Young World Record non-typical mule deer with a traditional recurve bow. He shot his last deer with a bow when he was 85 years old. He spent his working years as a logger, rancher and tree farmer. He cared for the land with future generations in mind, striving to leave each place better than he found it. He found great joy in watching the trees he planted grow and in knowing he could leave a legacy in the forest. Romie passed peacefully in the Ferry County Nursing Home on July 13th. He was a member of the Republic Gun Club, Kiwanis, WA State Cattlemen's Association, WA Farm Forestry Association and the National Tree Farm Program. Romie is survived by his wife of 71 years, Jean Hilderbrant and his three daughters; Dawn (Mickey) Woolley, Nancy (Russell) Burbank, and Rhonda (Richard) Eich, nine grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Norman and Blanche and his brother Alden.
The service to celebrate Romie's life will be held on Sunday, August 6th at 1:00 at the Republic Elementary School Gym. Potluck following. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the Ferry CountyNursing Home at 36 Klondike Road, Republic, WA 99166.
