Maybelle "Dot"
Jeanette Kuhlmann
April 1, 1929 – November 24, 2020
Maybelle Jeanette Kuhlmann, age 91, passed peacefully on November 24, 2020 in the arms of her Savior. She was born on March 31, 1929 in Tonasket, Washington to William and Erna "Babe" (Battermann) Harneit.
After living with her parents in a variety of settings around Tonasket and Havillah, Maybelle (Dot to those who knew her well), settled in Havillah with her husband, Leonard H. Kuhlmann. She was married on January 22, 1948, and had four children, Lenette, Jim, Bob, and Paul.
If you ever had the opportunity to visit her home in Havillah you would have admired the wonderful garden filled with potatoes, beans, peas, carrots, and an assortment of other vegetables. She loved planting, caring for, and admiring the flowers in her yard and frequently displayed floral arrangements in her home as well as in church. She took great delight in arranging flowers for special events, sharing her joy for God's creation with others.
Dot dutifully supported her husband's work as a farmer, helping to move cows, spray weeds, feed the chickens, butcher, pick rocks, etc. She also worked outside the home at Smith and Nelson as an apple sorter and packer. After 34 years Dot retired to enjoy numerous travel experiences with Leonard and family members. Each trip expanded her horizons and brought newfound appreciation for God's creation. Their trips included many states, much of Europe, New Zealand, Canada and Mexico. Among her very favorite travels, though, Dot treasured a few retreats to Holden Village in Washington State with some of her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Known as a wife, Aunt, Mom, Grandma and Great Grandma, Dot was a fantastic cook although she would downplay that praise. When you entered her home you would frequently enjoy the sweet smell of some kind of dessert. At least three types of cookies were always present in the kitchen and enjoyed at any opportunity. Midday snacks were a common occurrence in her home.
Dot was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Havillah and the Lutheran Women's Missionary League, where she spent countless hours making quilts for those in need. Along with other women in Dot's congregation, she learned the fine art of ecclesiastical embroidery, and helped create the beautiful altar paraments used in services at Immanuel. She also had a life-long dedication to Lutheran Camp Ortoha. She took pleasure in serving her Lord through the ministry of serving others.
Dot is survived by her four children; Lenette (Paul) Schuldheisz, Jim (Linda), Bob (Billi), and Paul. Also surviving Dot are her sister, Irene Kuhlmann, of Havillah; eight grandchildren and their spouses: Amy (John) Kimsey, Jenny Schuldheisz, John (Leah) Schuldheisz, Doug (Sara) Kuhlmann, Gregg (Julie) Kuhlmann, Jaima Kuhlmann, Jillian Kuhlmann, and Caitlin (Patrick) Lewis; and thirteen great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Leonard Kuhlmann, sister Jeanette Seiler, and great granddaughter, Ellie Schuldheisz.
The family wishes to extend their thanks to the care workers and staff at Tonasket Extended Care, and Orchard Country Manor. We give thanks to God our Father through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
A private committal service will be held at the Havillah cemetery to commemorate Dot's life. Memorials may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church (1608 Havillah RD, Tonasket, WA 98855), where a park bench will be placed in Dot's memory at the Havillah Cemetery. Excess funds will support Camp Ortoha and the church's quilting ministry.
