Kenneth Donald Ripley was born in Penticton, B.C., on May 18, 1936, to William “Bill” Ripley and Elizabeth “Betty” Ripley. A lifelong resident of Oroville, Wash., he lived life with a cowboys' spirit, a love for animals, an unwavering faith, and a heart devoted to his family. He passed away Oct. 11, 2026, at the age of 90, leaving behind a lifetime of memories and a family who will miss him dearly.
A cowboy all his life, he spent countless years in the saddle and enjoyed the freedom and adventure that came with it. He was happiest enjoying the outdoors. Ken believed in hard work and wasn't afraid to get his hands dirty. He proudly served in the U.S. Air Force and played soccer in England at this time. When he returned, he began his working career with the Great Northern Railroad, where he spent more than 20 years. In the early 1980s, he took over the Sawtells orchard and became an orchardist. From the railroad to the orchard, Ken built a life shaped by dedication, perseverance, and a willingness to work hard.
As much as he loved horses and the outdoors, his family held a special place in his heart. Ken grew up in a family of seven children. He carried that sense of family into the life he shared with his beloved wife, Judy, of 64 years. Together they raised four children and were blessed with several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who brought him much joy. Ken didn't just watch his children grow up; he got involved. Horses were more than just a hobby; they were a lifelong passion. His love for them led him to become a 4-H horse leader, where he shared his knowledge and enthusiasm with young people. He also coached soccer, giving his time and energy to the activities. It was one more way he passed along a part of himself to others.
Ken is survived by his wife, Judy, their four children: Janet (Doug) Funston, Alden Ripley, Doreen (Chris) Cleman, and Ken J. Ripley. He’s also survived by grandchildren, great grandchildren, and one sister, Ann (Joe) Runk. Ken's life was a reminder that the best things are simple: time spent with family, a day outdoors, the familiar feel of a saddle, and the satisfaction of an honest day's work. He lived life in his own way, with a cowboy spirit that stayed with him throughout the years.
A memorial service celebrating Ken’s life will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, 2026, at United Fellowship Church in Oroville, Wash. Family and friends are invited to gather in remembrance and celebration of a life well lived. There will be a shared luncheon following service provided by the United Fellowship Church.
Ride on, Ken. May your trails be open, your horses steady, and your spirit free. You will always be remembered and deeply missed.
