Harry Hartman Haney Sr., age 92, logger, author, and historian of Oroville, Washington was delivered into the world by is mid-wife grandmother in a log cabin on July 10, 1918 in the township of Rat Root, Minnesota.
The Haney Homestead was so remote education necessitated Harry board-out with a family near the one-room grades 1-8 school. Double-promotion allowed him to graduate early so he could begin logging in the north woods of Minnesota, living in a log cabin with an older seasoned logger.
In a few short years a German/Ottawa Indian family, the Boldts, came North with their family including a young, tall daughter Gladys to pick blueberries. The logger and the young lady married, had a son, Harry Jr., migrated West to Oroville, soon had a second child, a daughter, Carole Joy. The marriage ended in 1946 with Gladys and Carole moving to California.
In 1956 Harry married a wonderful young widow, Madge Ellis, with three children –Darlene, Jackie, and Gary – the best thing that ever happened in his life. Together they enjoyed 56 years.
Upon retirement, Harry Sr. through his former employer and friend, Web Hallauer, acquired a small acreage on Mt. Hull which he turned into a replica of the logging camps in which he worked as a young man, naming the place, Almost Home. Many years on Hull cutting wood, plowing snow with his John Deere, building roads, and doing other work for Mt. Hull folks brought him great pleasure, happiness, and a unique identity.
Again with Web Hallauer's assistance, Harry Sr. became an author of local renoun for his book; "An Old Time Logger".
The last year of Harry's life was spent at the North Valley Extended Care in Tonasket, Washington receiving excellent care from the staff and his doctor, Richard Welton, M.D. Harry passed peacefully, early A.M., March 12, 2011 with his bucket list complete.
SURVIVING RELATIVES
Harry Sr. is survived by his spouse, Madge of Oroville; Son Harry Jr (Linda) of Puyallup; Daughters Darlene (Charlie) Rentfro of Spokane, Jackie Lynch of Oroville, Carole (Ruben) Santistevan of Nampa, ID.
Also brothers Francis (Wanda) of Ray, Minn., Chet (Marge) of Oroville and Sisters Winnie (George) Barker of Oroville and Laura Hepp of Yakima.
In addition he leaves behind 13 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren and 21 great- great grandchildren. Last but not least, his beloved cat Muffy.
Harry was preceded in death by a son, Gary Ellis, a granddaughter, Janet (Shamberger) Johnson and two great grandchildren, Lacey Johnson and Robby Toth.
Predeceased siblings include four brothers Bill, Dick, Bob, Jim and sisters Annie Olson and Rosie Olson.
SERVICES
Services will be held Friday, March 18, 2011, at 11:00 A.M.. at the Oroville Faith Lutheran Church, where Harry was a long-time member. Pastor Dan Kunkel will officiate. Burial will follow at Oroville Riverview Cemetery. Memorials may be made in Harry's name to the Oroville Museum or the Oroville Faith Lutheran Church.
