Gladys Pearl Northrop Lembcke, 91, was born on April 3, 1925 on Toroda Creek, Curlew, WA, to Earl & Effie (Brannan) Northrop. She passed away comfortably on December 21, 2016 at Providence Mt. Carmel hospital in Colville, WA.
She grew up in Walla Walla & Hover area. Gladys graduated from River View High School in Hover, WA in 1943.
Gladys worked at top-secret level in the offices of the Hanford Project (Part of the Manhattan Project) in Hanford, south central Washington.
She moved to Sitka, Alaska to be with her sister Luella & her husband Web. She worked in the Columbia Lumber sawmill in Sitka.
Luella & Gladys took a trip back down to Toroda Creek to visit their Aunt Leona Johnson & Aunt Pearl Robinson, who cooked for the guys at the sawmill on Toroda Creek. While there, Gladys met Richard Lembcke and after a very short courtship of 12 days, they were married on April 10, 1946.
They built their home up Long Alec Creek Rd, in Curlew across the road from the Lembcke Brother's sawmill, where they lived for 59 years. She worked in the sawmill as an off-bearer on the re-saw & also rode the carriage as the setter.
Gladys stumbled upon Sunday morning meeting with her Aunt Leona & Aunt Pearl at the Toroda Creek sawmill cookhouse. She was quickly drawn to the love she felt & simplicity of their worship of God. Not long thereafter she embraced the love of the Lord she saw in her two Aunts for herself and Richard followed. They attended gospel meetings & the love & peace that they found lasted their whole lives. They adopted two children, Keith & Carolyn and were the best parents you would ever find. Gladys was extremely crafty & creative. She loved to share her talents with the local children & whoever was interested in learning about her sewing, canning, drawing, crafts, cooking & her love for astronomy. Her children felt very blessed to have been chosen/adopted by Richard & Gladys.
After their children were raised & grown/moved out on their own, Gladys went to work at the Curlew school as a teacher's aide/playground aide. She dearly loved every child she came in contact with & helped. She loved designing school hall display boards, but her favorite time spent there was individually helping the children read or work on their schoolwork.
Gladys & Richard were a huge part of the Ansorge Hotel. She took tours of the hotel during the summers. As they were co-owners with her sister, Luella & Web Burns she knew the history of the hotel and loved to share that with anyone coming in to take the tour.
Gladys truly loved her family pets. She never allowed any pet bigger that a dog because she would say "Our house is not big enough", especially the horses! Her home was a safe, loving haven for all stray animals including a teeny, tiny mouse that Richard brought home from the sawmill in his lunch pail.
You never saw Gladys without a smile on her face. Her favorite thing to say was "The only complaint I have is that I don't have anything at all to complain about."
Richard & Gladys had almost 60 years of a very happy marriage until Richard passed away from cancer. Gladys then moved off the mountain to Colville where she lived for 10 more years always missing the love of her life, Richard.
Surviving relatives include her children: Richard Roger Windsor Keith Lembcke of Colville, WA & Carolyn Fern Lembcke Streight of Nine Mile Falls, WA. She leaves behind 9 Grandchildren and 19 Great Grandchildren.
Gladys was preceded in death by Husband Richard Roger Windsor Lembcke, Brothers Earl & Grant Northrop, Robert, Dick & Pete Lawton, Sisters Nellie Brown & Luella Burns.
Services will be held at the Curlew Civic Hall, Curlew, WA, on 28 December 2016 at 1:00pm, officiated by Brian Getz and Scott Price.
