Genevieve Margaret
(Layton) Novotney
June 10, 1918 – May 20, 2012
Genevieve Margaret (Layton) Novotney 93 of Republic died on Sunday, May 20, 2012 at Ferry County Memorial Hospital in Republic. She was born June 10, 1918 in Darien, Missouri to Joseph Kendrick and Martha Mary (Blankenburg) Layton. She attended elementary and early high school at Rosehill School in Mukilteo, WA. She spent the last two years of high school at Okanogan where she graduated in 1936. In October of 1936 she married William B. Brown in Snohomish County and together they had five children. William preceded her in death.
In April 1950, she married William W. Alloway in Kittitas County and together they had a daughter. William preceded her in death in August 1991.
Genevieve, known as "Gen" to her many friends in Ferry County, married Clifford D. Novotney in Republic in October of 1992 and he preceded her in death in July 1998.
Gen's nickname in high school was "Ace Layton" aptly named for her uncanny ability to ace many serves. She enjoyed hunting with the Millers in their Jeep "Napoleon", riding the range with the Grumbachs and picking huckleberries with the Kroupas in Canada. Gen considered one of her greatest accomplishments of riding a burro down the trail to the bottom of the Grand Canyon (with her sister Cleo) when she was 75. She was also an accomplished seamstress and made many articles of clothing for herself and family. She contributed many personalized poems for occasions through the years and was a pinochle partner and player to be reckoned with.
Her love for God was reflected in her love for family, friends and community. Family and friends meant everything to Genevieve.
She was a 50+ year member of the Eagle Cliff Grange and a lifelong member of the Catholic Church.

Five Daughters: Theresa A. "Terri" (Jack) Lindsey of Republic, Mary M. Nichols of Marysville, Claire A. (Sid) Bardwell of Colville, Constance L. (Curt) Brenner of Republic and Debra L. (Roland) Thiele of Curlew
Two Sisters: Cleo Layton of Bellingham
Lenit (Troy) Cheney of Wenatchee
One Brother: Urban E. (Lee)Layton of Goldendale.
20 Grandchildren and 31 Great Grandchildren
Genevieve was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers (Lawrence and Herbert) and two sisters (Viola and Lucile).
Rosary services will be held on Wednesday, May 23, 2012 7:00 PM
Mass will be said on Thursday, May 24, 2012 10:00 AM at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Republic with Father Steven Werner, presiding. Interment will follow at the Curlew Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.
