Obituary

Frederick Oscar Maple passed away peacefully at his home, on Friday, October 9, 2020.  Fred was born in Mason City, WA, near present day Grand Coulee, on July 13, 1937 to Mabel Inez (Fox) and Boyce Richard Maple.  He and his younger brother William (Bill) Maple spent their summers in Wauconda on their grandparents' ranch.  There Fred learned to love the outdoors, hunting, fishing, ranching and farming.  He always preferred the countryside with hills and forests to any city's hustle and bustle.  He graduated in 1956 from Highline High School in Seattle and the very next day relocated with his brother to Okanogan County to work on the ranch.

From 1960-1962 he served in the United States Army.  He was stationed in Germany.  When his tour was over Fred returned to Okanogan County where he owned and operated a saw mill, with his brother Bill, and their friends Dal Dagnon and Melvin Shunn.  On July 10, 1965, Fred married Kathleen Mari Zachman (Judd).  They bought and moved into their present-day home on South State Frontage Road in 1966, where they raised three children and ran a small cattle operation.  Fred began working at the old Biles Coleman Mill in Omak, in 1968 and worked there for 30 years as a millwright before retiring in 1998.

Fred was an avid hunter and fisherman.  He also enjoyed bowling, playing tennis and chess.  He had many a tale to tell of his mule deer and elk adventures.  Fred got a boat upon retiring and was always more than willing to take anyone out to go fishing.  He got a big kick out of watching his grandchildren reel and yard them in.  He loved to go to Wauconda and walk the land he explored as a child and teen.

Fred is preceded in death by his grandparents (Fred and Bertha Fox), parents (Mabel Spry and B.R. Maple) and brother (Bill Maple).  He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Kathy, and their three children, Laura Temby (Bill), Kenneth Maple (Melissa), Mary Milliken (Douglas) and ten grandchildren, Becky, Nicholas, Taylor, Zachary, Caitlin, Miranda, Bradon, William and Valarie, as well as 8 great grandchildren.  His children and grandchildren will remember him as a gentle man and a gentleman.

Family would like to thank Trevor Rise from Frontier Hospice for his excellent care.  A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.  Memorial donations can be made in his name to the Wounded Warrior Project.

Bergh Funeral Service & Crematory is in care of arrangements.
