Obituary

Funeral services were held Saturday, June 27th for Donna Lee Boiko at the Catholic Church in Republic Washington. She died suddenly in her home in Curlew Washington on June 23th, of heart failure. She was born in Elk River, Idaho, Sept 2, 1931 to Art and Loretta Anderson. She was born into the height of the depression. As her family moved around the country, as many families did, they finally came to stop in the Okanogan Valley in Washington State, where she was to spent her most formative years. She met Mike Boiko there and married him in 1952. In 1957 they moved to Curlew, where they bought and operated the Curlew Tavern. As they grew their family, so too, they grew their business and in 1980 built and opened the Blue Cougar Restaurant which she operated until it closed. Together they owned and operated a family business in Curlew for almost fifty years.

The early years of her life taught her that nothing in life meant more than family and community and nurturing both brought her great joy and satisfaction. She took great enjoyment in supporting her children's high school sports teams holding what would become legendary "crab feeds" to fund camps, travel, uniforms. The crab feeds would go on to fund community projects for the water district and fire hall. Both sons and daughter would go on to play on state championship basketball teams which she was very proud of. In her later years her interest in sports grew to include the Gonzaga men and women's basketball teams and the Seattle Mariners. Go Ichiro! She truly loved the town of Curlew. She gave its water district the land for its water source so it would always have clean water and gave the fire district land for a new station. The land was sold and a health clinic built there instead but other land was purchased with the money and a new station was eventually built.

She was buried in Curlew at the local Cemetery and is survived by brother Don and his wife Genon, brother Bernard, sisters Delores and Norma, sister-n-law Marilyn. Sons Mike, Gordon, Alex and his wife Yvonne, daughters Susan and Stacy and many grand and great-grandchildren and well as many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, Art and Loretta, husband Mike, son Danny, brother Jerry, brother-n-laws Jimmy Lawson and Tommy Jones, and sister-n-law Bertha.  She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. The family would like to thank pallbearers John Stotts, Bill Somday, Ron Russel, Gordie Strandberg, Tommie and Teddy Jones, the Curlew Fire and Rescue team, Wild Rose Floral in Tonasket, and Bergh's Funeral Home. All  did a fantastic job of taking care of her, we appreciate it very much. And thank you to all who came and paid last respects to her, hopefully, when the covid-19 virus lets up we'll get together for a great send off, the kind both she and the town deserve.
