He was born on May 16, 1943 in Omak Washington to Grace MacKenzie and Kenneth Donald MacKenzie and lived most of his life in Omak. He attended School in Omak and at Hill Military Academy, Portland Oregon. After a short period of living on the coast he moved back to Omak settling on Johnson Creek Road close to his boyhood home.

He became a Mason in 1992 and was a member of both Palestine Lodge #214 and Okanogan Masonic Lodge #169. He was the Master of Palestine Lodge five times. Don was also a Royal Arch Mason and served for many years on the Board of Directors for the Royal Arch Mason's Children's Heart Foundation. In that capacity he helped many children with heart problems. It always gave him great happiness to see a young person whom he had helped grown, strong and healthy.
