David T
Caddy
June 12, 1935 – September 25, 2013
David
T Caddy was born in
Dave moved to Chelan
when he was young and graduated from
His family all moved to
Tonasket in the late 1950's, and he worked at a local gas station. At Tonasket
he met his future wife Miriam Brown and they were married July 21, 1960. In
1962 they moved to Ephrata, where Dave ran a gas station and shop. In 1966 they
moved back to Tonasket and leased the chevron station at the corner of 4
th
and Western. Dave remained at that station for thirty two years. Many high
school students worked there, some for credit at school; later some of their
sons and daughters worked there too.
Dave was a devoted
family man with a great work ethic; he put in very long hours at his business
and farms to make sure his family had everything they required. This work ethic was passed on to his children
as they grew up working alongside their dad.
Dave was a firm believer that family always came first.
Dave had a great love
for kids of all ages and several, other than his own, lived in the Caddy
household at various times. He never turned down anyone who needed food or a place
to stay. He was a man that went out of his way to help people. Dave was very
supportive of the school district and spent many nights at sporting events and
other programs watching his own kids as well as those of relatives and members
of the community. He also supported his grandchildren in their events.
Dave had many other
occupations over the years. He farmed raising cattle, sheep, and hay; Dave also
had an orchard for a time. He was manager of the Aeneas Lake irrigation system
for several years. Dave also owned the Western Auto/Ace Hardware Store, where
NAPA is now located, for several years. Dave was a city council member in late
1970's and the early 1980's and then in 1998 he began an 8 year term as mayor
of Tonasket. He loved the job and always expressed disbelief "that a simple
country boy like him would be the mayor". Some of his former classmates also
expressed disbelief that he was mayor. He worked on and accomplished many
things as mayor. The new sewer treatment plant, ball fields at Chief Tonasket
Park, Fourth Street bridge, B-3 skate park, TVBRC and Day Park, airport
improvements, first track field at the school, better water quality and new
wells, and a partnership with the Colville Confederated Tribe and salmon
viewing platform were all projects he was involved with. The sidewalk and
lighting project from downtown to the school complex was a Department of
Transportation Director Award winning project. Dave was mayor when the city
gave a 99 year lease for the legacy project and he has a plaque on the wall
there honoring his military service.
Dave was a Golden Age
member of the Eagles, member of the Chamber of Commerce for several years and
Grand Marshall along with his wife Miriam, for the 2006 Founders Day Parade and
celebration. He and his wife were also Santa and Mrs. Claus for several years
for the annual Winter Fest celebration.
Dave is survived by his
wife of 53 years, Miriam, sons Dave Jr. (Julie) of Tonasket, James (LaLaina) of
Elmer City, daughters Mary (Ken) Weese of Tonasket, and Joanie (Mike) Stenberg
of Omak, sister Alice Pitt of Tonasket, brothers Jack Caddy (Rayetta) of
Tonasket and James Caddy (Cathy) of Arizona, grandchildren Stacy, Derek,
Cassidy, Ashlee, Reese, Tylee, Makaylee, Jayton, Cassie, Danielle, Jonathan,
Mason, and Jacob and 4 great
grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Dave was preceded in
death by his parents Thomas S and Alice Wilding Caddy and granddaughter Sierra
Nicole Caddy.
We will always love you
and keep you in our hearts.
A memorial service will
be held Saturday, October 5, 2013, at 11:00 A.M. at the Ellisforde
Church of the Brethren with Pastor James Yaussy Albright officiating.
