Obituary

Bonnie Jeanne Smith. (1923-2026)

With hearts full of gratitude for her 102 years and also sorrow, we announce the passing of Bonnie Jeanne Smith (Holbert) on June 14, 2026.  Born in 1923 in Loomis, Washington, Bonnie developed her love of nature growing up in this close knit rural community. All of her life she was in her element creating beautiful gardens, hunting mushrooms up Toates Coulee or walking the irrigation ditch bank in the late afternoon looking for asparagus.  After graduating from Tonasket High School in 1941, she then married Monte E Smith in 1944, and they set up house in Maine where Monte was stationed during World War II. Their daughter Susan was born there in 1946. After the war, the family returned to Tonasket, where they then welcomed their son Scott in 1950. Over her 100 plus years, Bonnie worked at Boeing contributing to the war effort in the forties, packed apples at Smith & Nelson in the fifties and sixties, and worked tirelessly all her life nurturing her family and creating a beautiful home and surrounding landscape.

Bonnie also suffered profound losses, from the early death of her mother Francis Holbert in 1930, and her father, William Holbert in 1959 to her daughter, Susan Doud in 1998, her sister Barb Gobin, and her husband of 71 years, Monte Smith, in 2015. She remained positive however and appreciative of the life Monte had provided for them. Her devotion to him was unmatched and everlasting. She taught her grandchildren to keep going, and that there's always something to look forward to, even if it's the day you get to heaven and get to see your loved ones again. Grandma believed in God, in heaven and in a person's ability to keep moving forward no matter what. She believed in miracles too.

We can only hope that we might be mowing our lawn and planting beautiful gardens at 90 years old, or cruising an assisted living home like it's a college dorm full of friends when we are 100. Bonnie’s life consisted of over a century full of love, compassion, and adventure, Her legacy will live forever within the hearts of her loved ones who were the center of her life.

Bonnie is survived by her son, Scott Smith and his wife, Montie, of Tonasket, WA, her four Grandchildren; Matt Smith (Danika) of Tonasket, WA, Meg Estes (Levi) of Spokane, WA. Lisa Doud, of Enumclaw, WA, and Amy Brazinskas (Derek) of Buckley, WA, and her Great-Grandchildren; Casey, Emily, Stella, Simon, Vivian and Amelia, along with many other special family members.

The family wishes to express their appreciation to all of the staff at Apple Springs Assisted Living for the personalized and attentive care they gave Bonnie over the last four years. Bergh Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements and a family memorial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to North Valley Community Health Foundation, 203 S. Western Ave. Tonasket, WA 98855.
