Barbara Ann
Dahl
July 21, 1929 – December 18, 2023
Barbara Ann Dahl, age 94, of Republic died December 18, 2023. She was born, an identical twin, on July 21, 1929 in Wenatchee to parents Victor and Faye Unger.
Barbara aka "Bobbie" and her identical twin sister Beverly Diane Rivers were born just before the stock market crash of 1929 and grew up during the Great Depression and World War Two. She and Bev enjoyed messing with people's heads, as identicals often do, going so far as to swap places with each other's dates. When a young man thought he was going out with Bobbie, he'd really be enjoying a movie or soda with Bev. The ladies made certain to do the big reveal before too much time had passed. As time went on, this sort of prank grew boring and adulthood beckoned.
Barbara raised five children from three unions, Larry, Niki, Kimmie, Jeri and Coley. She relocated to Curlew Washington to help care for her elderly Aunt Virginia and Uncle Buck, and to raise son Coley, and help Niki take care of her own children. She also worked as a Senior Lunch Program assistant in town. After her partner, Harry Helms died, Barbara eventually moved to Republic, where she busied herself assisting her daughter in law's daycare program, helping "Grandma" Coley's kids, reading anything she could get her hands on, especially mysteries, keeping track of what was happening in town via her police scanner--there were no secrets in town, and spending her final days in the Ferry County Hospital's nursing home facility.
Barbara loved country western movies, Mariners Baseball, movies from the Golden Age and singing. She had a lovely voice and would burst into song at any time. Her sense of humor was keen and could be wicked but not meant to cause pain. Her heart was huge, her temper mighty, and her stories legion. She was extremely special to all who were lucky enough to know and love her.
She is survived by her children: Lawrence "Larry" Albert, Kimberly Ann Carlson, Jeri Lynn Bassette and Coley Victor Helms, 13 grandchildren and 15+ great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Alan Adair Unger, sister Beverly Diane Rivers, and daughter Niki Noel Smith.
A memorial service will be planned for the spring.
